The Return of a Colt, and the Rise of a New Era

The past returned to Colt Country on Friday night, but Buena made sure the present belonged to them.

The focus quickly shifted from the reunion to Buena's performance. The Colts dominated Casa Grande from start to finish, rolling to a 48-13 victory and continuing one of their strongest stretches of the season. The win moved Buena to 5-3 and marked the team's fourth consecutive home victory.

The matchup carried some extra meaning with former Buena head coach Joseph Thomas returning to Sierra Vista as Casa Grande's head coach. Thomas left Buena after helping establish a successful stretch for the program, finishing his final nine seasons there with a 54-33 record. His departure opened the door for a new chapter, with Chris Determan taking over as Buena's current head coach after previously serving on Thomas' staff.

The Colts' offense was nearly unstoppable. Buena finished with 536 total yards, its highest total since gaining 543 yards against Skyline in September 2025, repeatedly finding ways to move the football and turn its production into points. The Colts also finished with 19 first downs, keeping drives alive and consistently putting pressure on the Casa Grande defense.

But the story wasn't just the offense, Buena's defense made sure Casa Grande never had a chance to match the Colts' production. The defense held the Cougars to just 13 points, while Buena's offense put up 48. That 35-point margin reflected how well the Colts controlled the game on both sides of the football.

The result was one of Buena's most complete performances of the season: 536 yards of offense, 19 first downs and only 13 points allowed while also continuing Buena's strong run at home. The Colts have now won four straight at home, giving the team plenty of momentum heading into the final weeks of the regular season, but there isn't much time to celebrate.

Next up: Canyon del Oro. Buena will travel to Tucson on Friday, Oct. 23, to take on the 4-4 Dorados in another 5A Sonoran matchup.

At 5-3, the Colts have positioned themselves for an important finish to the regular season. The offense is producing, the defense is limiting opponents and the team is finding ways to win when it matters. The past may have walked back into Colt Country on Friday night.

But the future belongs to Buena.
