Coming off another “complete” game against Flowing Wells, the Colts kept rolling on the hardwood against the Nogales Apaches. The Colts (12-3) would look to end the week, battling it out with the Nogales Apaches (7-10) in another region game as they sought their 13th win while also trying to add an additional win to their impressive home winning streak, which was at 16 games.
The Colts would play amazingly straight off the opening tip, setting the tone with a smothering defense that completely shut down Nogales. By halftime, the Apaches were held to just 8 points, and Buena would ride this momentum until the final buzzer, resulting in a monster 81-30 win. A key contributor to the win was none other than senior forward Thomas Welker, who piled 22 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals, and a block, displaying his intensity throughout the entire game. Three additional Colts had also scored in double figures and as a team shot a pleasing 71% from 2-point range. Buena committed only 11 turnovers, and racked up an incredible 17 steals.
Buena’s JV team also put on an absolute show, downing Nogales in a 103-51 win. Sophomore forward Kaden Lea racked up plenty of buckets, ending with 25 for the game. Sophomore guard MJ Humes, who added 22 points with 5 threes, and also junior guard Matthew Castillo, poured in 15 points and 3 threes. This was one of the best this wins of the season for the Colts JV team, as one of those “complete wins”. Offensively and defensively, everything seemed to come together.
The Colts' JVb team came out victorious in a tight one, beating the Apaches 50-46, as multiple Buena guys played a big role in getting the dub, such as sophomore forward Carlos Flores dropping 19 points, while also dominating on the glass and getting to the line. Freshman forward Kevin Lassiter poured in 8 points and freshman guard Rico Quiroz added 5 points, hitting a nice deep three in the process. Towards the end of the regulation, freshman guard Jameson Faust hit a nasty move to shake his defender, got fouled, and went to the line where he the free throw to put the game away.
Another “complete win” by the entire program as the varsity Colts improve their record to 13-3 on the season and extend their home win-streak to an unbelievable 17 games. They’re
high on cloud nine, feeling great as they continue to remain focused, disciplined, and success-seeking as the regular season is slowly coming to an end.
